Internet has surpassed TV as the “most essential” medium

The latest Infinite Dial study by Arbitron and Edison Resaerch shows that Internet has surpassed TV as the "most essential" medium for the first time.

When the respondents were asked which they would choose if they must never watch television or never access Internet, 49% of respondents chose to eliminate television. This is higher when compared to the survey conducted in 2001 that showed only 26% of the respondents chose to eliminate television.

86% of Companies Planning to Spend more money on Social Media Next Year

According to a survey report published by Econsultancy and bigmouthmedia majority of companies(86%) surveyed planning to spend more money on social media in 2010, and 13% of the companies surveyed are planning to retain the same budget.

  • Almost two-thirds (64%) of companies say they have experimented with social media but have not done much.

  • Micro-blogging (i.e. Twitter) is now the most widely adopted social media tactic, used by 78% of company respondents.

  • Just under half of companies (46%) are not yet using reputation or buzz monitoring tools to understand what is being said about their brand.

  • Nearly a third of respondents (31%) are not spending any of their budget on social media.

  • There is a mixed view of the benefits of Twitter, with almost a third of respondents (31%) saying that here are tremendous opportunities available.

  • The biggest barrier to better social media engagement for companies surveyed is the lack of resources (54%).

Small Biz Chooses Search over Social Networks

More than three-fourths (76%) of small-business owners have not found social networking sites to be helpful in generating business leads or for expanding their business during the last year, and 86% say they have not used social networking sites to get business advice or information, according to a new Citibank/GfK Roper survey.

The survey of 500 small business executives across the US revealed that despite widespread consumer use and increasing marketing efforts on social-media sites - such as Facebook, MySpace and LinkedIn - among larger organizations, managers in smaller businesses apparently are not jumping on the bandwagon.
